With the increasing costs of casting in bronze, I have concentrated on finding alternative sculpting mediums to create my work. Using styrofoam as a core, I have been able to keep production costs low, creativity unencumbered and prolific. The result is a finished work that can easily be translated into bronze if desired. An added benefit of this light weight material keeps shipping and transporting costs in check.
The styrofoam is carved with a hot knife and covered with layers of plaster gauze for a durable, strong surface. A coating of water putty covers and subdues the gauzy material and gives a modeled, almost plaster look to the surface.
